Within the first few hours I spent playing Final Fantasy IX, I predicted that opinions over it would be sharply contrasting. Much of today's following of the Final Fantasy series consists of people who were brought on board with Final Fantasy VII, which is often credited with single-handedly bringing RPGs into the mainstream. So, we have a lot of FF fans out there who never experienced the first two thirds of the series, and never bothered to get the previous games because of a stigma against anything on outdated consoles.

Now we have Final Fantasy IX, a game which is basically a response to long-time series fans' complaints about the direction the series has been taking. I was definitely one of these complainants. While I loved FFVII, FFVIII had serious problems with both its plot and gameplay. What these two games had in common is that they almost completely lost touch with the fantasy elements of their predecessors, becoming entirely sci-fi outings instead of the blend of genres that has made Final Fantasy so interesting.

I think almost everyone who is a long-time fan of the series and enjoyed the feel of the first six installments is going love Final Fantasy IX. As for the people who are new to the series, FFIX will be different from what they've experienced up to this point. Some may be quick to embrace it, while it will probably turn many people off.

So how much of Final Fantasy IX is a retro experience? To begin with, FFIX's plot shows the effort to return to the style of pre-PSX Final Fantasies. The world of FFIX is vastly medieval, with technology playing a limited role. It's still a world of mixed genres, but when you spend the game walking through castles and cobblestone paths instead of concrete roads and neon skyscrapers, you can tell the difference.

The party is back up to four, a welcome correction after two games with the decidedly underwhelming party of three. This four-person party is very important, because like early FFs, the emphasis in FFIX is on having a well-balanced party instead of highly customizable individual characters. In FFVII and VIII, the characters were basically blank slates that you could build up any way you wanted, with very few individual characteristics (basically the limit breaks). In FFIX, characters each have classes once again-- not every character can do every technique or spell. There are fighters who will never be able to cast magic and mages who will be extremely weak fighters but powerful magic users. You also have characters who are mostly healers, and the return of FF classes like Dragoon and Blue Mage. The idea of course is to create a balanced party using these classes.

Ah, this game was good. I thought that every Final Fantasy after 7 was just corporate bullshit, but this game turned it around (however, 8 was just a joke and a half). The first time I played it (rented when it came out and played it for a week straight), I thought it was kinda bad. I figured the characters were too childish and the graphics too "cute". However, I re-played it a month or two ago and found it to be very entertaining. I would have to say this was Square's last good creation in the Final Fantasy series.

1st of all, what are the names and sizes of the files that you have downloaded?!

Their names should be

FFIXNTSCUCD1.7z.001

if any of these names was wrong, rename it to the once specified up, if any of the sizes was wrong, redownload the file, if they were all right, then right click the 1st file (FFIXNTSCUCD1.7z.001) and choose "Extract Here", it'll ask you for the password, enter http://snesorama.us

Now you'll get the image file, you start your emulator and go File --> Run ISO, choose the image file that has been extracted and then TADAA, the game will work perfectly

On ePSXe, go to : Config --> Video --> Configure, there you look for "FPS limit (10-200)", you click on it and enter 60.0 in the box, and then check the "Use FPS limit", then Ok, Ok and then run the game. :)

Well, that fixed that problem. Thanks. One more quick question.

For the most part I have all my menus. I have my speaking menus my choice menus my main menus and stuff, and everything else shows up, I have no shading problems, but I can't get my battle menu to come up. I can attack and do everything, but I have to do it blindly because for whatever reason it won't appear, which makes things difficult. Any idea on this? i've tried changing window color but it didn't help in this particular instance.

This is a widely known problem in the ePSXe emulator. It has been gone over many times in the Download Difficulties/Gameplay Issues section.

What you need to do is save the game before the airship scene, shut down ePSXe, get PSXeven, run PSXeven, load the savestate from ePSXe (you might need a savestate converter) / or you can save to the memcard in ePSXe and load the memcard in PSXeven, get past the airship part in the game, and from here you can either continue playing the game in PSXeven or save and convert/load the savestate or memcard to use in ePSXe again.

EDIT: Okay, so I got espxeven and can get thrgouh the movie, but I can't use savestates on that version, so I have to get to the next in-game save point, but when it goes into the battle with Black Waltz No. 3, it messes up and my comp makes it stop the program. What should I do?

Okay, I tried editing my earlier post so as not to double, but I guess you missed it. Anyway, it's kinda to go along with the airship thing. I got epsxEven, and I can get past the movie. But, since it doesn't have save states, I need to get to the next in-game save point to save and switch back over. But now, it says there's an error when I get to the part where it goes into battle with Black Waltz 3, and it shuts down the program. On my video plugin (Pete's open gl2 I think), I put on the special fixes and the one for 1.5.2 and older EPSXE, as well as the one for FF9 battle mode, but it still doesn't work. What do I do?

Hmm, you didn't try someone's suggestion os using epsxe vesion 1.0, did you? epsxe v 1.0 isn't what psxeven is, psxeven is another emulator, a different one. Get it from here: http://batard.psxfanatics.com.
Try that on it, should work.

Once you put the files in the SAME directory, use hjsplit or 7z to join them and you'll get a bin+cue files (as it's said on the main game post). That's it!

Comparing to FinalFantasy Tactics, this game is still far... But I agree that FinalFantasy is the only WORTH game to play and wasting time on it in playstation!

I was frustrated for this game because:

1. I can't get the EXCALIBUR II (knew it but it was late)! Seeking a way to cheat (gameshark...), but there's no way to get that sword! LOL

2. Wasting too much time to level up all characters (killing dragon, catching frog and the worst is STEALING!) to beat ozma.

I don't know what's going on there, but my FF9 CD images were made from my original CDs. Did you get this from Valencia's mirror?

More than likely he got it from Valencia's mirror. Going thru the DC section I found over half of it was done by her. And most of the games were very questionable (no region, no file format, etc.), not to mention I am almost sure she was stealing everything from Emuparadise now that I have seen this (most of the DC games she upped were games that I released at EP as Akuma). So I would not be surprised here if she upped a stolen psx game. Fuckin thief.

you downloaded an incomplete file. download process was interrupted before a file was completely downloaded. check files if you have a .sfv file provided by upolader. if not, check file sizes.

You need to download all (4) parts: .001, .002, .003 & .004, then right clic on the .001 and extract it (it will automatically "read" the other files") and done! :)

i downloaded final fantasy IX and did all that 7z and got the .bin for the first cd, but when i load it with psx-p , it loads showing the square-soft logo but after that the screen turns green(not totally but greenish with alot of black spots), then the psp restart itself. and also i have a problem with final fantasy VIII eboot it freezes in the movie of the school after quistis comes and pick you up from the infirmary . please helppppppp i cant play these 2 games(they were the main reason for me to get a psp) .

dude its prob cause when u made eboot of games some of them totaly screw up if its PAL or NTSC, try downloading the other version, use a different program to make the eboot or use a different commpression ratio, i have disc 1 and 2 on my psp and there both fine *FFIX* It wont tend to work with PSX-P because its been wrighten as a normal homebrew app and is still in development, try upgrading to the new OE custom firmwares and try it then, it will work pefecto :)

alright... There's a big glitch in this FF9 for me. Whenever I'm getting on the ship with everyone (steiner, dagger, zidane, and vivi), to go to Lindblum, but are really on the way back to alexandria castle. When u just get done fighting no. 2 and go to board the ship, it gets to the video of the ship taking off, but right as the ship is about to leave the screen, the game pauses and starts skipping like a CD player. anyone know what's wrong??? I've tried changing all the plugins and everything, but no luck. I've even re-downloaded it from the same mirror and different mirrors as well.

ah, i got it fixed finally. I downloaded ePSXE v1.5.2 and replaced v1.6 with it and it seems to be working just fine now.

So i download final fantasy 9 using the mediafire sites
the first file for every disc is .001 Archive
while the next 3 is .002 File
when it comes to extracting i use 7zip
i am able to extract the .001Archive while the ones with.002 File
it gets stuck and extracting is impossible

If the CDs had the same SLUS # then they would all be the same disk. Each seperate disk has it's own unique SLUS #. If you looked at the information for other multi-disk games you would see that the same is true for them also.

Everything had been working great, until the 3rd CD. The game loads up fine, I can play well for a few minutes, and then when Vivi joins some people to watch a play, the game freezes and the screen goes black. I've tried doing it again several times with the same result.

Keep in mind I burned the image and am playing it on my PlayStation. Should I burn it again?

are u waiting between download times or are u just taking that long to download? if ur taking that long its ur connection but there are several mirrors and zshare doesnt make u wait like megaupload (7 hours between downloads x_x) so try downloading from differen mirrors. (for each disk not parts of each)

I downloaded all four parts of the first CD and tried to unzip them, and it gave me that error.

Are you sure you used 7-zip to unzip (it's a very common error when it's not
used)? If you did, probably one of the parts didn't download correctly, so try
checking at which part the filesize is unusual (all parts except the last usually
have the same size, while the last part is smaller) and re-downloading that
part.

I had a NTSC UC version but with lots of errors on it.

Thinking of downloading this at some point though.

Also Last i ran this game on a emulator it didnt display the Text in the battle.

It actually is lower quality graphics then other GPU plugins, but is the only plugin that can run something like "Codebreaker"...its annoying -_-

Hi, download all files for a CD that belong to one of the mirrors and use the
password that corresponds to that mirror. If the password doesn't work, try
one of the other passwords seen in this thread. As a last resort, download
from another mirror.

...and don't post in unrelated threads, like the PAL-E one.

You just need to go to the config again and browse and select the memcard
you used in ePSXe. This emulator is self contained and doesn't use any plugins.

Hi.
Um, I was wondering about Pete's GL2 version?
I was trying this out on GL1 and there wasn't any battle screen info and I had to play blind. Somebody posted a question of how to get this to stop. Somebody else said "try GL2" and there weren't any more problems.
But when I tried it it said: "Missing Framebuffer object extension" and then it'd stop working.
So I tinkered around with the settings on the Graphics settings, but nothing is working. I get other problems like: "missing render-texture extension" and "No pixel format available" and then it'd stop working.
So, what my question is: what is the settings that work this thing?
or: is there something else that I need to download for this thing to work? like Framebuffer? and what is it anyway?
Help would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Hi, your graphics card doesn't support the features required for this plugin (pixel-shaders nad
prolly projected textures). However, the game does work correctly with GL1, you just need to
enable the correct special game fix (the ff9 one).

Hey dude, great up!!!!! Couldn't resist, I've downloaded and started playing right away. But I have a problem: I'm using Petes OpenGL 1.76 Video Plugin, but I've changed to P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.16, cause the graphics are awesome, looks just like my old PS1, and I don't have a nice graphic card and RAM. So the problem is: When I engage a battle the battle menu don't show up.

i used to config that was used in the how to faq on the board it work fine

you have to use ePSXe version 1.5.2
ePSXE version 1.6.0 doesn't play the full game, it freezes after you get to Dali the first time.

Dude, just use PSX 1.13 instead, ePSXe is buggy with alot of Square games.

hi,
i have a really strange problem with the 3th cd from this game.
First i had this problem with the fmv on the airship on cd 1 but i changed the epsxe version from 1.60 into 1.70 and it was fine.

But now i am on the 3th CD after the card tournament.
There is a scene with Kuja after his dialogue the screen goes black and it hanged.

so i enabled the log of the epsxe and there came this message:
WARNING: IsoRead overflow

i can't play anymore. i tried and tried but nothing helped.
i hope anyone know a solution for my problem.

I have found a solution by myself.
The problem was the save state function from the epsxe.
On the first both discs were everything fine but on the 3th disc it became any trouble to this function.

Aww, that really bites. Have you tried using another emulator? Or perhaps the game itself had to be in a different format. There is any number of problems that could cause the game to stop working. Emulation can be a tricky business :scratch:

I find the pSX emulator works very well for this game. It's self-contained so the only other files you need are the bios and memory cards, which you already have. There's a link to download it, along with some other stuff, in my signature. :D

I had the same problem.. On some forum they said it was cause Epsx 6.1 or something doesnt support it. So trying a other version of epsx emu should work. Havent tested it myself yet tho

Edit: Ah here it is.. "For those whose game freezes in the cut scene of cargo ship you are most likely using epsxe160. You can easily fix this by downloading an older version of epsxe( epsxe152). Make sure you save state using the emulator, not the ingame save, in epsxe160. Then copy ALL the files in the sstate folder of epsxe160 into the sstate folder of epsexe152. Finally load state on epsxe152 and the game will not freeze in the cut scene. This is a very quick way to get past the freeze without having to download another torrent."... Hope it works.. Imma find out myself also once download finish xD

Edit: Ah here it is.. "For those whose game freezes in the cut scene of cargo ship you are most likely using epsxe160. You can easily fix this by downloading an older version of epsxe( epsxe152). Make sure you save state using the emulator, not the ingame save, in epsxe160. Then copy ALL the files in the sstate folder of epsxe160 into the sstate folder of epsexe152. Finally load state on epsxe152 and the game will not freeze in the cut scene. This is a very quick way to get past the freeze without having to download another torrent."... Hope it works.. Oh sophus00 where do I get the bios I tried the latest one and got an error that it couldn't find some dll something or other. I tried placing everything there but got nada

just get that dll file ... google it, most likely it's zlib1.dll ... i had that error when I switched the versions, after dumping that file in the directory it worked fine

But just type in epsx on google. Its the first site that shows. And about the DLL file it should be located in windows/system32 directory. So google it and drop it there :)

Ok, I need help. T_T.. It has taken me three days to get this game to work porperly. I never got past the play until I was sure EVERYTHING was perfect, which it was. Now, my issue is this.

Disc 1, perfect play through... Until I need to switch to Disc 2... I tried EVERY Disc 2 that's in this thread, heck I even tried all of the 3rd and 4th discs just to be sure, BUT I get the error of incorrect disc... o_O

Nuuu.... Could someone please help me? I would REALLY love to play FFIX again.

Hi , i got ePSXe 1.5.2, and on P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.18 video plugin, almost everything works fine. In battle when i'm using magic game and sound works slower Or in menu (equip/status/items) Fps going from 60 to 30. And when i turn ON Use Frame Skipping, everything works fine , but in battle i don't see attack/hp/mp menu. PLZ HELP

I suggest you to use an older version of ePSXe like 1.5.2.

Anyway, guys this the game owns. Although i recognize VII as the best Final Fantasy I enjoyed IX more than anything!

Hey, i downloaded a bin/cue version of FFXI as well as a .ccd, .sub, and .img. Im tryin to burn them using either nero or magicISO so i can play it on my ps1, but its not working. Ive done this successfully for other games, i cant figure this one out though
